    • The 1900 census for South Omaha (Ward 1) in Douglas, NE states that Charles Akofer (age 41) was born in Austria Germany in May of 1859. He worked as a saloon proprietor and immigrated to the USA in 1870. His wife Rose (age 37) was born in May of 1863 in Iowa. Her parents were from Germany. The couple had been married for 18 years and bore four children with three still alive in 1900. Those children were: Hilda C. (17 years old) born in Nov. of 1862 in Iowa; Charles A. (15 years old) born in April of 1885 in Iowa; and Andrew J. (11 years old) born in September of 1888 in Nebraska. (source: Find A Grave).

      Charles Akofer came from Iowa to South Omaha August 28, 1886. He was the first permanent butcher of this city (source).

    3. [S4] Obituary.
      Charles Akofer Dead.
      Charles Akofer died at his home, Twenty-fourth and K streets, at 5 o’clock Tuesday afternoon. The deceased was one of the pioneer residents of the Magic City. During the greater part of his residence here Mr. Akofer was engaged in the retail meat business. For over a year he had been ailing, but death came unexpectedly. The deceased was a member of the local lodge of Eagles and the Modern Brotherhood of America. The funeral will be held under the auspices of the Modern Brotherhood. A special meeting of the Eagles has been called for this evening at A. O. H. hall, 2311 N street, for the purpose of taking some action. Arrangements for this funeral will be announced later.

    4. [S4] Obituary.
      Fraternal Order of Eagles, had charge of the funeral of Charles Akofer yesterday afternoon. About seventy members of the order met at the lodge rooms and marched in a body to the family residence. Twenty-fourth and K street. At the house Rev. Dr. R. L. Wheeler of the Presbyterian church and Dr. George Van Winkl of the Baptist church conducted the servlces. The Eagles escorted the remain to the grav at Laurel Hill cemetery, where brief services wer held. The pall bearers were: John Brlggs, James Van Arman, Louis Williams, John Riches, T. J. O’Connor, William Hayden.
