      James A. Clingenpeel, a retired Ahsahka, Idaho, grocery store owner, died of cancer Monday evening at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center at Lewiston. He was 76.
       He was born to Burt and Susan Pulliam Clingenpeel Sept. 1, 1913, at Starbuck, Wash. He grew up and attended schools at Starbuck, moving with his parents to Ahsahka in 1933.
       The family purchased the Bee Hive Grocery Store at Ahsahka the same year, and after his father’s death in 1934, he became a full partner with his mother in the store.
       In 1942, Clingenpeel joined the US Army, serving in the South Pacific as a military police officer. Upon his discharge in 1945, he returned to Ahsahka and the grocery business.
       He married Margaret L. Gross at Lewiston Sept. 29, 1960.
       He worked in the dietary department at State Hospital North at Orofino and was a part-time mail carrier for the US Postal Service until his retirement in about 1979. He enjoyed fishing, rose gardening and studying the culture of American Indians.
       Survivors include his wife of Ahsahka; three stepdaughters, Patricia Nees of Silver Spring, Md., Shirley Purcell of Alamagordo, NM, and Gwen Grimm of Portland, Ore.; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
       Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at 1 pm Friday at the Orofino Nazarene Church with the Rev. Jim Reeves officating. Pine Hills Funeral Chapel at Orofino is in charge of arrangements.
