    7. [S4] Obituary.
Mrs. Sarah J. H. Staples, wife of Peter Staples, passed out of this life Saturday, the 24th inst., after a long and distressing sickness of brights disease, at the age of 74 years and nine months. She was the last surviving member of the family of Isaac M. Hobbs, of the Hobbs lineage which in early years was numerous dating from 1735 when Thomas Hobbs, one of the early settlers came to this place from Kittery and commenced lumber operations on the Negutaquit brook, where T. B. Hussey & Son are now located. For one hundred and seventy years the family name has represented an important settlement and business of this town.
Deceased was born at the homestead owned and occupied by several preceding generations of the name, and excepting eight years residence in the southern states, has ever occpied the same estate. A son by her first marriage, William Hanson, died twenty-four years ago, and she married her surviving husband, twenty-two years ago. Three nieces, Mrs. C. H. Prescott of Biddeford, Miss Margaret Hobbs of this village and Mrs. Isabelle Mansfield of Dover, N. H., are the only near relatives, although there are several cousins on both her father’s and her mother’s side still living. Mrs. Staples was in a large sense, a worthy woman and no word of reproach could truly be said of her. Her home was well known for hospitality and good cheer, and the adopted family of her last husband are frank in her praise as a kind mother, with whome a mutual affection prevailed.
The funeral service was held Wednesday at the home, Rev. J. L. Smith and Rev. James Boyd officiating. The special thought given by Mr. Boyd as peculiarly appropriate was the sentence in Scripture, “She hath done what she could,” and his eulogy was emphatic and indorsed by a large company present. Appropriate singing was by Miss Bertha Knight, Mrs. Charles Boyle, E. P. Spinney and Harry Potts. The casket was literally embanked with floral tribute of rich selections and beautiful designs.
