As Many of you know we said good-bye to my mother,
Christine Hughes McDuffee, this past November. She was fit and active until the last month of her life. She passed the way she lived with quiet courage and grace. In her last days she was in a tremendous amount of pain which she concealed as best she could. There was no doubt that she was suffering.
Two years ago I was reading Pilgrim’s Progress and I had gotten to the bit where Pilgrim has to go through the Valley of Death. There was no way around it, no other way to get where he was going and that is where I stopped because I had to walk through my own dark and terrible valley.
I would never wish tragedy and suffering on anyone and certainly wouldn’t have chosen that for my family or myself or my mother. But seeing my mother in those last days reminded me that the joy of life and love and all that is good is on the otherside of that valley and it is all the sweeter because of the journey.
Lots of love from,
Katherine McDuffee Smith
