      J. Lathern Morse -- At Western Kings Memorial Hospital, Berwick, where he had been a patient since May 18, last, when he was injured by a fall in his Somerset home, John Lathern Morse passed away last Sunday morning. Believed to have been the oldest male resident of the Somerset district, Mr Morse was born December 24, 1859, one of the five children of Leverett and Hannah (Chase) Morse born on the Morse homestead in Pleasant Valley. In 1880 he went to the United States, where he lived nine years, seven of which he was a foreman carpenter in New York.
His father, then in failing health, persuaded him to return to take charge of the farm in 1889, and since that date, Mr Morse had lived in Pleasant Valley and Somerset, carrying on extensive farming until he retired some ten years ago. Mr Morse was well-liked for a quiet, unassuming and uncomplaining disposition, and was known as a regular reader of the Bible. In politics, he was a life-long Liberal. Mr Morse was twice married, his first wife being Lavinia Ratchford, of Cambridge.
Two children by that marriage survive -- Mrs R J Witter (Sylvia), Somerset, and Avard Morse, Kentville, two surviving grandchildren (Helen Morse, Halifax, and Ross Witter, Somerset) being their children. Mr Morse’s second wife, whom he married in 1905 was Ina Clark, Welsford, who survives him. Funeral services were conducted at the home of Mrs Witter, yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon, at 2 o’clock, by Rev C Daniel Matheson, pastor of Berwick United Church, with Miss Annie Bennett in charge of the music for two favourite hymns, "Shall we Gather at the River", and "Where he Leads me I will Follow". Pallbearers were M D Sawlor, George Mullins, Iras Avery and Floyd Spicer. Interment was in the family lot in Berwick Cemetery."
