      CHAPEL HILL — Sidney Shaw Chipman died July 9. He was 97. He was a graduate of Acadia University in Nova Scotia and received medical training at Edinburgh University in Scotland and McGill University in Quebec. He completed a pediatrics residency at Babis Hospital in New York City. He also served a 20-year tenure at the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Public Health. He was the founder and first chairman of the department of maternal and child health. While living in Chapel Hill Chipman served on the Public Housing Authority and was one of the founders of the Community Church.
       Survivors include two sons Robert K. Chipman of Bradford, Vt., and David R. Chipman of Couthbury, Conn., a daughter Wendy L. Chipman of Durham, a brother Curtis Holmes Chipman of Wolfville, Nova Scotia; six grandchildren and nine greatgrandchildren.
       Memorials may be made to the Chipman Scholarship Fund at the UNC-CH School of Public Health Department of Maternal & Child Health or to the Charles House Adult Day Center in Canboro.
