NEWINGTON —
Carl B. Akerley, 87, of 325 Fox Point Road, died Wednesday, June 8, 2005 at his home.Carl was born May 19, 1918, in Greenland, NH, the son of Fred and Augusta Akerley. He attended Greenland and Portsmouth schools.
In 1939, Carl worked on the construction of the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge. He was later employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. In September 1942, he became a full-time fireman at the Portsmouth Fire Department, a position he held for 12 years. In 1954, he was sworn in as a Conservation Officer with the NH Fish and Game Department. He was subsequently promoted to District Chief of the Seacoast District, a position he held until his retirement in 1982. An ardent sportsman throughout his life, his knowledge of Great Bay and its environs was unsurpassed. For many years he wrote the popular Tracks ?N Trails column for the Portsmouth Herald.
He is survived by Kathleen, his wife of 63 years; daughters Dianne Scott, of Portsmouth, Janice Stuart, and her husband Dan, of Newington; son Joseph Akerley, and his wife Paula, of Newington; six grandchildren: Krista Low, and her husband David, of Portsmouth, Timothy Stuart, and his wife Laura, of Farmington, Heather Kelly, and her husband Joe, of Rochester, and Scott, Mandy and Lori Akerley, of Newington; and four great-grandchildren: Katie and Kori Low, of Portsmouth, and Shayla and Christopher Stuart, of Farmington.
